Textile Framing is one of our specialist services at Fine Framers, and one which we take great pride in.
Our textile framing service is suitable for:
- Tapestries
- Crochet pieces
- Embroidery pieces
- Cross-stitches
- Any other textiles or fabrics of significance or sentimental value, such as baby blanket or pillows.
We use conservation framing techniques in all textile framing projects. This means the textiles won’t suffer damage over time from sunlight or condensation, or from adhesives or any other part of the framing process.
Our high level of expertise in conservation framing is shown by how five staff members have completed specialist training with the Fine Art Trade Guild. We know of no other framers in the area who can offer such a level of service.
Our Textile Framing process
First, we take the fabric and stretch it over an acid-free board. We do not use glues or tapes to hold it in place. Instead, we use a matrix of stitches.
This ensures that all our textile framing projects are fully reversible – i.e. the fabric can later be removed from the display, if desired, and still remain in its original condition.
We then create a recess in a backboard, to hold the fabric in place. Again, this removes the need for any damaging adhesives.
Next, we use a top mountboard to separate the fabric from the glass to be used. This means there is no danger of the display becoming damaged and rotten through condensation over time.
Finally, we use museum grade or conservation grade glass, to protect the fabric from UV rays.
The photos below illustrate the process. You can also view the video underneath, for a fuller explanation.
